2010 Scott City All School Reunion – Part #1

Scott City, Kansas’ all school reunion was held July 2, 3 & 4th, 2010 as it does every 5 years. I was attending as part of the class of 1948 for our 62nd anniversary.

I started July 2  on the road at 6 AM. I had planned to get to Garden City before noon. (I had to stay in Garden City as there were no rooms left in Scott). But there was so much construction along the Kansas highways, that I lost over an hour and didn’t arrive until 1 PM. By the time I checked in and drove to Scott, it was 2:30 PM.

Our class had 15 in attendance (out of  59, those in the graduating class or 65 class students).  We count those who didn’t graduate with us, or the 59, but also those who attended high school at one time or another or the 65. As usual we were hosted by the Keith and Betty Jean Burgess family.

We met at the Burgess’ home on Friday after registering at the High School. We started showing up at the Burgess’ mid-afternoon and then were to go to the High School to see a number of dedications. Unfortunately, only one person (Doris Dean-Whinery) went to these evens. The rest of us stayed at the Burgess’. When Doris returned and we had dinner.

On July 3, the class of 1948 had two entries in the parade. These were in the form of two vehicles driven by Ronnie Eaton and Bob Harkness with passengers Lowell Rudolph and Keith Burgess. The pictures of these floats are below. After the parade, we all went back to the Burgess’ for lunch where we stayed and had very lively discussions. Additional class members arrived for day 2 of the reunion. Late afternoon the classes of the 1930′s and 1940′s met at the Methodist church for a get together of all the real old-timers. There was a program under the excellent direction of  Thelma Barnett-Miller of the class of 1949. And a special thanks to Joyce Wicker-Wiechman for her performances.  The only negative was for  the caterer. He got there 30 minutes late. This activity broke up at about 9 PM. By the way I left my hat at the church. It had a “Bud” on the front.

As  I had commitments on July 4th back here in Tulsa, I had to leave for Tulsa at 6:20 AM on the 4th. I’ve seen nothing about the happenings of the class on July 4th. The 1948 Class, along with other year classes, were to go the various Churches for Sunday services, and the Churches would provide lunch. This total event was a city wide event, not just the different schools. There was to be an all school dinner at the fair grounds followed by entertainment, dancing and a fire works display.

One thing that was a lot different this year was that we had a new “old” guest at our classes functions. Don Burdick who was a class mate in the early years of grade school, attended our functions along with his wife. Don was a part of the class from kindergarten until “we” think the 3rd grade. We know him a little better than some of the others who left over the years, as Don ended up in Dighton. We played against him in sports.

Below are some of the pictures which I took. Not a good year for pictures as I spent most of my time at the Burgess’. I won’t show all the pictures, as there are too many. Such as I got at least one picture of every float, and that can be a little boring. I do have a DVD of the total event, plus picture of those who have passed away and of those we think are still alive.  These are available by contacting me at 11604 E 23 St, Tulsa, OK 74129 or at budmarie@aol.com.

From the class of 65 students, 30 have passed away and 35 are still alive. Not really bad for a group of kids that will all, or almost all, will be 80 this year.

My apology to Ron Eaton and Verla Blickenstaff-Been for not having a current picture of them. I just didn’t take a current picture of them. I used the one from our 60 years reunion in 2008 for their pictures. They look the same today as they did 2 years ago.

This part has all the 1948 students that attended the July 2 & 3 get togethers.

Moving your pointer over the picture gives a picture title and clicking picture  will make the picture larger. To return to the entry, go to the left arrow at the left of the address/browser line.
