April 2011 Middle of Month – General

Monday, April 18th, 2011

It’s really been a tough month. Not a lot going on around here. We started this month feeling very sorry for ourselves due to the lousy weather and Evelyn’s passing in February. And we’ve just gone from no moisture at all this year (a little lie) to an inch last week while the rest of the state was dealing with tornado’s.

I’ve been able to get flowers planted and just today I got the tomato’s planted. I’m not going for the big tomato’s this year but for the small and medium size. I don’t like to put stuff(spray them that is)  on the tomato’s as I don’t like the eating of stuff not really made for man to eat. The large tomatoes spend a lot of time on the plant so they are subject to birds and squirrels eating them or at least part of them. Anyway I’ll go back to the old days of the cherry and medium size plants this year. Azaleas haven’t really grown much this past year and these are two year old plants. The geraniums are those that I’ll take to Marion this Memorial Day.

We also lost a big peach tree this past winter. We had to take it down a couple of weeks ago. We still have a couple of Apple trees and one other peach tree which is only a couple of years old. Hopefully we’ll get a few peaches this year.

I did have to mow again this morning and I did the almost daily cleanup of the driveway after the winds of yesterday. We had 25 to 35 MPH winds yesterday but the winds are only 15 to 20 MPH today, so this is the reason I could get a little done today. Tomorrow we are to have storms again. We’re just on the edge of the storm area but you can tell everyone is ready. The weather guys are really happy today because like last Thursday they will be on the tube from 3 PM until 11 PM tomorrow.

The picture below is of a robins nest on the front porch. Now this is a master piece of work by the mommy and daddy birds. Plus there are two blue eggs. We decided to let them hatch so we will have something to show the grand kids. I’ll also show some of the pictures I took of some of the flowers in the yard.

September 2010 – A Bad Month

Friday, October 29th, 2010

It started on the morning of September 13. Marie drove me to the hospital (St. John’s here in Tulsa) about 6AM as I was to have my right hip replaced. We were to check in on the 12th floor by 6:30AM. Got checked in and was told to undress and get into a gown. I was then rolled to the operating area on the 3rd floor. Now this was the very same area I was rolled into 17 months earlier when I had my left hip replaced. Again I was put in a wait status. I have no idea how long I was there. I got my IV earlier. I do remember another guy being rolled in and he was as quiet as I was.

Suddenly I was taken thru many many hall ways and finally into an operating room. Now I member everything about this procedure as I was not given a shot before being moved into the operating room. Next I was introduced to the anesthesiologist who would controlling all that really goes on within the operating room. It seemed like a long time as they said the sergeon was not available. Finally Dr Josephson showed up and the anesthesiologist asked if it was OK to use a spinal block. As I had read that this procedure was the less evasive I said it was OK, thinking I’d get my shot and then they would get the spinal. The next thing I remember was that the anesthesiologist said this is going to hurt a bit. Boy was he wrong, it hurt a lot. Then my legs, which were cold, suddenly got real warm and even hot. But there was no pain anywhere. There was a while when I remembered nothing, but this was interrupted with the Surgeon and the anesthesiologist talking. Then the noise of a saw and the feeling and hearing of hammering. This is when I realized I was listening while the surgery was being performed. I think I must have gone into shock or something at this point. I remember hearing “were done”

From this point on it was being moved and then answering every time they asked me if I could feel anything, along with being shot or something being placed in my arm. Finally the feeling returned to my right leg followed by about 30 minutes by my left leg. Then back to my room. At this point I think I went to sleep (or they put me out) as the next think I remember was eating .

Then I remember seeing Marie and eventaully being rolled off to the exercise area. I did have a few problems at this point. My blood sugar levels were in the 300 – 400′s and I was getting ‘LANTUS’ insulin  shots along with my medicine (pills). Also it became impossible to pass urine. I was then given a catheter by a hospital “trainee” who looked like “Ivan The Terrible” and who had an spoke with a strange sound, like being from another country. It was like the spinal tap.

This was my procedure until I was released from the hospital on Thursday September 16th.

The rest of the months (September and October) was spent in pain from the catheter and the continual removing and  replacements of catheters. As I was on pain pills, I really felt no pain at all from the hip or right leg.  I was finally given a test (not a mental test but a procedure relating to my bladder) that must have been planned by “Ivan The Terrible’s Mother”. Lucky for me the next Wednesday the catheter was removed and all was well with my bladder. Now this total experience has made me reject any notion of modesty. Any suggestion that women are gentle humans is false. When they insert or remove a catheter, I really believe they are planning on hurting you.

Still having problems with the sugar levels. It doesn’t pay to be a diabetic.

Also, someone really needs to let you know that operations can cause parts of the body to “go to sleep”. In my case my bladder shut down and a catheter was needed to drain my bladder. My pancreas is also or may be affected. What I was told after the surgery is that sometimes this happens.

Tomb of the Unknown Soldier – February 2010

Monday, August 2nd, 2010

I received the above pictures from a friend, Burte Banks, and I think we should all be ashamed of gripping about the snow and cold. These guys are at the mercy of the weather, et. al., days and night for 24 hours per day. And on top of that this is a national monument to our fighting men and women.

Tulsa Rain and Snow – January 29 Plus

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

After earlier snows we have another snow on the 29th of January. These are some of the pictures here at the house. This year will probably be a bad year for snow.

An Ice Pole

Late January 2010

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

This has been a terrible month. The weather has been terrible, then nice and now we are looking at ice and snow for later this week.

I finally got most of the data from the old computer moved to the new system and the new and old systems are moved and hopefully finally fixed. Windows7 is not a good package. It assumes that are users are dumb and it does everything for you. But to a degree that makes finding anything almost impossible. I spend most of my time trying to find data. But one thing about Windows7. If I live long enough to get another computer, it will be a MAC. I guess you should say my life computerwise was better in the old days as I was or felt that I was in control. Today I know I’m not in control of the computer or even know what’s going on with the system.

Need to get filled up on gas for the cars because of the approaching storm. The last ice storm a little over two years ago, we were without power for a number of days. We never did get the chimney repaired so we freeze again if we do have an electrical outage. The cars we can use for warming up if necessary.

The last ”ice storm” all the electric poles to the south of our place were down at least for three blocks. The pole in our yard lost its cross beam and was split when the other ploes went down. The Electric Company personnel working on the line said they would be back later to replace the pole in our yard. Guess what, they never came back. I think I’ll go look for a stand alone TV with batteries so we can stay informed. My radio that picks up TV stations is out. As it was based on analog, it would possibly use less anyway.

And to think we, the city of Tulsa, are laying off 147 firemen and 155 policemen/women as of next week. We have a moncho republican mayor to go with our idiot congressmen/women and senators. These people are real conservatives.

Off to WalMart to spend money.
