Fourth Of July At Laura’s and Steve’s

Saturday, August 7th, 2010

I got back from Scott City a little after-noon and we headed to the Langley’s mid-afternoon. It was a hot day and people were arriving most of the afternoon. Steve’s sister Margaret and her son were up from Texas, Bud and Marie from Tulsa, Arlene Langley (Steve’s mom) from Broken Arrow OK, and Steve and Laura Langley and son Dustin from their place north-west of Skiatook.

There were card games played by some of the older folks and a lot of other stuff by the kids. Fire works were in use all afternoon and on into the evening.Laura, Marie and Arlene also picked black berries.  A good time was had by all.

2010 Scott City All School Reunion – Part #1

Saturday, August 7th, 2010

Scott City, Kansas’ all school reunion was held July 2, 3 & 4th, 2010 as it does every 5 years. I was attending as part of the class of 1948 for our 62nd anniversary.

I started July 2  on the road at 6 AM. I had planned to get to Garden City before noon. (I had to stay in Garden City as there were no rooms left in Scott). But there was so much construction along the Kansas highways, that I lost over an hour and didn’t arrive until 1 PM. By the time I checked in and drove to Scott, it was 2:30 PM.

Our class had 15 in attendance (out of  59, those in the graduating class or 65 class students).  We count those who didn’t graduate with us, or the 59, but also those who attended high school at one time or another or the 65. As usual we were hosted by the Keith and Betty Jean Burgess family.

We met at the Burgess’ home on Friday after registering at the High School. We started showing up at the Burgess’ mid-afternoon and then were to go to the High School to see a number of dedications. Unfortunately, only one person (Doris Dean-Whinery) went to these evens. The rest of us stayed at the Burgess’. When Doris returned and we had dinner.

On July 3, the class of 1948 had two entries in the parade. These were in the form of two vehicles driven by Ronnie Eaton and Bob Harkness with passengers Lowell Rudolph and Keith Burgess. The pictures of these floats are below. After the parade, we all went back to the Burgess’ for lunch where we stayed and had very lively discussions. Additional class members arrived for day 2 of the reunion. Late afternoon the classes of the 1930′s and 1940′s met at the Methodist church for a get together of all the real old-timers. There was a program under the excellent direction of  Thelma Barnett-Miller of the class of 1949. And a special thanks to Joyce Wicker-Wiechman for her performances.  The only negative was for  the caterer. He got there 30 minutes late. This activity broke up at about 9 PM. By the way I left my hat at the church. It had a “Bud” on the front.

As  I had commitments on July 4th back here in Tulsa, I had to leave for Tulsa at 6:20 AM on the 4th. I’ve seen nothing about the happenings of the class on July 4th. The 1948 Class, along with other year classes, were to go the various Churches for Sunday services, and the Churches would provide lunch. This total event was a city wide event, not just the different schools. There was to be an all school dinner at the fair grounds followed by entertainment, dancing and a fire works display.

One thing that was a lot different this year was that we had a new “old” guest at our classes functions. Don Burdick who was a class mate in the early years of grade school, attended our functions along with his wife. Don was a part of the class from kindergarten until “we” think the 3rd grade. We know him a little better than some of the others who left over the years, as Don ended up in Dighton. We played against him in sports.

Below are some of the pictures which I took. Not a good year for pictures as I spent most of my time at the Burgess’. I won’t show all the pictures, as there are too many. Such as I got at least one picture of every float, and that can be a little boring. I do have a DVD of the total event, plus picture of those who have passed away and of those we think are still alive.  These are available by contacting me at 11604 E 23 St, Tulsa, OK 74129 or at budmarie@aol.com.

From the class of 65 students, 30 have passed away and 35 are still alive. Not really bad for a group of kids that will all, or almost all, will be 80 this year.

My apology to Ron Eaton and Verla Blickenstaff-Been for not having a current picture of them. I just didn’t take a current picture of them. I used the one from our 60 years reunion in 2008 for their pictures. They look the same today as they did 2 years ago.

This part has all the 1948 students that attended the July 2 & 3 get togethers.

2010 Scott City All School Reunion – Part #2

Saturday, August 7th, 2010

This part has all the non-1948 students that attended the July 3 get together at the Methodist Church. I tried to get all the class of 1940 as this was Pauline’s class and all of the class of 1946 as this was Virginia’s class. I wasn’t able to get nearly all of those I wanted to get.

June 2010 – New Fence

Friday, August 6th, 2010

But a lot of effort went into replacing the 96 feet of fencing that was rotting and falling down. I knew I didn’t want to spend the $1500 it was going to cost to have the fense done by professionals so I decided to do it myself. But it turned out to be a very large task. I had to replace some posts and more cross members than I care to think about.

It also took a week and a half to complete the effort. When you use cement for the posts you lose time awaiting for the cement to cure.

But I did get a good tan or maybe a slight burn. With the heat of summer I was generally not able to work a full 8 hours a day. Or maybe it’s because I’m to old for this stuff.

Bill & Evelyn and Kids

Dick, Evelyn, Marie & Paul

This year’s Reunion was held June 25 through 27th at Arrowhead Park in Oklahoma as it has in the past 15 years. This is the 16th annual reunion having started in 1995. Dick andShirley were unable to attend this year as Dick is still recovering. Paul was here early on Friday but became ill and had to return to Muskogee. But the reunion went on as planned.

This BLOG will only attempt to show this years attendees and not the activities, because of the number of pictures that are available. We had 46 attendees including family and a few friends. There were additional friends of the family, numbering somewhere between five (5) and ten (10), who were present Saturday PM.

Total pictures will be placed on a DVD or a CD depending on the available time this August. It will possibly be all the available pictures placed on a CD and a DVD show as in previous years. We will notify the family later this month for them to let us know what they would like to have.

Activities this year were Croquet, badminton, horse-shoes, softball, poker, water-balloons, little kids water pool, water sliding, kids drawing, slime preparation, a kids parade, lotsa talking, setting around, bingo and eating.

I will be grouping the pictures with each of the various families.

If you didn’t pick up some of the pictures that Brandis put out on FaceBook, I copied some of them off . I hope Brandis doesn’t take exception to the them being published in the BLOG.

By the way, Brandis Watts is Keith Taylor’s daughter. She is one of the twins.

June 2010 – Baseball Again

Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010

These pictures were after the final league tournament where they came in second. But these were excellent games. The coach and his assistants did an excellent job in rounding this group of  boys into a really good team. They are really to be praised for the time they put into this effort.

The  coach was Mitch Garrett and the assisants were Darrin Stagsdill, Brad Peck, Greg McNutt and Steve Langley.

June 2010 – Kassidy’s 17th Birthday Was May 31

Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010

We held the little party for Kassidy after his real birthday. This is usually the case because weekends are about the only time we can schedule everyone to attend. But everyone had a good time and Kassidy cleaned up in the money market.

This was a little different. We went to a local Mexican eating place. They have all the Mexican food you want as well as a game place for kids to play machine games. The kids had a ball at this place.
